The story of Women in Mining Ghana (WIM Ghana)
Is a dynamic and inclusive network of women committed to promoting gender equity and empowerment across the mining and extractive sectors. Our membership is composed of diverse women who play critical roles in shaping the future of mining in Ghana and beyond.
1. Industry Professionals
These are women with technical expertise who work in various capacities within the mining value chain. From geologists and mining engineers to environmental scientists, safety officers, and metallurgists, they contribute their knowledge and skills to the advancement of responsible and sustainable mining practices.
2. Women in Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM)
A significant portion of our membership consists of women actively engaged in ASM operations. They are miners, mine owners, processors, traders, and service providers. WIM Ghana serves as a platform to amplify their voices, improve livelihoods, and promote safe, equitable, and formalized ASM practices.
3. Academics, Researchers, and Students
We proudly welcome women in academia who are conducting research, teaching, and mentoring in mining-related disciplines. This category also includes university and secondary school students, particularly young girls with interest in STEM and mining careers, nurtured through our WIM Junior Clubs and youth empowerment initiatives.
4. Entrepreneurs and Service Providers
WIM Ghana embraces women-led businesses and entrepreneurs who support the mining sector through services such as equipment supply, logistics, catering, consulting, legal services, and more. These members are vital to strengthening local content and value addition in the sector.
5. Advocates and Policy Influencers
Some members work in governance, policy advocacy, and human rights, championing inclusive, transparent, and socially responsible mining. They bring expertise in community development, corporate social responsibility (CSR), gender mainstreaming, and stakeholder engagement.
6. Allied Male Supporters
While WIM Ghana is a women-centered organization, we recognize and appreciate the support of male allies who advocate for gender diversity and inclusion in the mining industry. They contribute to mentorship, collaboration, and strategic growth.
At WIM Ghana, we believe in unity through diversity, and we continue to grow a membership base that reflects the multifaceted nature of the mining sector. Whether in boots on the ground or at the policy table, our members are shaping a future where women’s contributions are visible, valued, and vital.
